June 20th- G.A.R. Hall Songwriter Showcase- It all begins with the song and the song begins with the songwriter. Our friend Erik Urycki of the Speedbumps, has invited three of his favorite songwriters for a special night at the Hall, where we celebrate the folks who write the words and the melodies that make our toes tap, make us laugh, make us cry and gives us something to sing about in the shower!
Here’s the lne-up:
Roger Hoover- This man really needs no introduction at the Hall- A fearless songwriter, Roge we er Hoover has distilled the experiences of an American wanderer into songs that illuminate the mysterious worlds and curiosity within each of us. Since 2003, Hoover has written and released 8 albums of original material. Roger Hoover, one of Northeast Ohio’s treasures.
Gretchen Pleuss-Gretchen Pleuss is an Ohio-bred singer-songwriter whose “vocal delivery and skillful finger picking call to mind the folk singers who graced the stage of the Gaslight Café during the 60’s Greenwich Village folk renaissance. Fans of Joni Mitchell, Nick Drake, and other folk luminaries will appreciate Gretchen’s gorgeous arrangements and thought-provoking songwriting.” – Dan Jarvis, Midwest Action.
Nicholas Edward Williams-The troubadour tells stories of the silent, simple perils of the average Joe. He plays on the cliche rhythms of married life, the age of convenience, the footprint of our generation, paying homage to his musical heroes, imagery of men drinking to the follies of America, and good old-fashioned murder ballads. Williams has his own brand of satire, simple honesty, and vivid imagery that translates into energetic live shows, harnessing rhythmic fingerpicking, soaring vocals, rolling harmonica, heart-thumping stomp box and charismatic whistling. All of which is backed with engaging descriptions and infectious personality between songs.
Erik Urycki- It is no big secret that Erik Urycki is the frontman for Northeast Ohio’s own The Speedbumps. What you might not know is that Erik is a prolific songwriter, penning most of the band’s tunes. Erik is a strong supporter of local musicans, booking local festivals, hosting open mics, and showing up at a friend’s gig to show support. Erik knows many songwriters and he hand-picked these three for this first showcase. Erik will be hosting the night…maybe we can talk him into singing a tune too!
