War of 1812 Dedication Ceremony

Hermon Bronson's HeadstoneOn Saturday, May 18, 2013 (Armed Forces Day) the Peninsula Foundation held a ceremony to remember our local War of 1812 veterans buried in Peninsula and Boston Township. The ceremony will be at Cedar Grove Cemetery at 11:30am. The William Wetmore Chapter of the Daughters of 1812 will lead the ceremony.

Below are the veterans buried in Peninsula and Boston Township:

  • Hermon Bronson was born in Waterbury, CT on December 17, 1774. He was married to Mary Hickox. They moved to Ohio in 1801. Hermon was a carpenter and also a large land owner that included saw and grist mill. He organized Bethel Episcopal (Bronson Memorial) Church. He served in the Connecticut Militia 28th Regiment – Buritts. Hermon died December 18, 1853 and is buried in Cedar Grove Cemetery.
  • Thomas Carter was born in 1781 and died November 1, 1832. He married Elizabeth. Thomas served in the Ohio Militia under Captain Hugh Flinn and is buried in Boston Mills Cemetery, Lot 175 Section 3.
  • William Carter was born in 1795 and died October 28, 1867. He liked hunting and fishing. William was married to Betsey Mays. He served in the Ohio Militia under Captain Timothy Bishop. Willam is buried in Cedar Grove Cemetery.
  • John Fayerweather was born in 1789 and died on July 14, 1857. He married Anna Wayland. John served in the Connecticut Militia 28th Regiment – Burritts and is buried in Cedar Grove Cemetery.
  • John Jacobs was born 1795 and died in July 1841. His wife’s name was Katherine. He served in the Ohio Militia under Captain John Campbell and is buried in Lot 133 Section 2 Boston Mills Cemetery.
  • David Long was born on October 16, 1789 and died on October 5, 1819. He served in the Ohio Militia under Captain Abner Barrett and is buried in Cedar Grove Cemetery.
  • William McBride was born in 1784 and died on August 26, 1828. His wife’s name was Agnes. He was a millwright and built Brandywine grist and flouring mill. William served in the Ohio Militia under Captain George Briant and is buried in Boston Mills Cemetery Sect 2 Lot 122 Grave 10.
  • Dr. Ebenezer Mather was born  in 1749 and died on July 15, 1831. He was the first doctor in Boston Township. Dr. Mather is buried in Boston Mills Cemetery, Section 3 Lot 160.
  • Aaron Smith was born in 1787 and died on Sept. 4, 1835. He served in the Ohio Militia under Captain Alexander Minary and is buried in Boston Mills Cemetery Section 2 Lot 118 or 119.
  • James Stanford was born in 1775 and died on January 13, 1827. He married Polly Johnston. He suggested the name for Boston Township. James served in the Ohio Militia under Captain Timothy Bishop and is buried in Boston Mills Cemetery Sect. 3 Lot 171.
  • Abel Thompson was born in 1800 in Massachusetts and died on Nov. 26, 1883. He married Sarah. He served in the Ohio Militia under Captain Joshua Woodward and is buried in Cedar Grove Cemetery Lot 55.
